Thesis Title: Why people listen to sad music when feeling sad.
About
Coming from a background in music and in psychology Annemieke van den Tol is currently doing a PhD on a topic that investigates the psychological value and implications of music. This research provides important insights in bringing a new perspective to music’s role in everyday life. She will defend my PhD thesis at the end of April 2012, granting me the qualification of PhD.
Annemieke has received a degree in Music Management at Fontys University in Tilburg (the Netherlands) and an degree in Psychology at the University of Tilburg (the Netherlands), where she also received her Master degree in Psychology and Health. In addition to these degrees, she has received a certificate in Mathematics from Tilburg University in 2006, she attended the certificate course in Affective Science that was held as a Summer School at the ‘’Swiss Centre of Competence in Research’ in Geneva Switzerland in 2011, and she has attended two certificate courses in Qualitative Research that were held at the University of Limerick in 2009 and 2011.
Results of her PhD research have been awarded with several awards, among which two SEMPRE conference awards and an Award for attending the International Summer School in Affective Science, Geneva, Switzerland, provided by the The National Centre of Competence in Research for the Affective Sciences. Morever her PhD research have resulted in several invitations for presenting the results of the PhD research at international conferences. Results have been presented as a poster presentation at the Research Methods Festival (ESRC), Oxford, England (2010), at Mozart and Medicine, Krems, Austria (2010). Results of this research have also been presented as a paper presentation at the Music & Health Research Group seminar day at the University of Limerick, Ireland (2010) and at the ICTM Ireland Annual Conference, Londonderry, Northern Ireland (2011), at ISSAS the Summer School in Affective Science in Geneva (2011)at the Striking a Chord Conference in Folkestone England (2011), and at the Power of Music Conference in Pert Australia (2011).
Annemieke is not only active as a researcher but she is also lecturing. She has been responsible for providing the module Music, Dance and Human Behaviour and she is the PhD representative in her faculties’ ethics committee and a Research assistant for Professor Jane Edwards. She has also given several guest lectures on a variety of topics such as on Research Methods and Self-regulation to Master students to Master students in Music Therapy and Master students in Arts and Health.
Annemieke has also provided labs and tutorials at the Psychology department of the University of Limerick. In 2011 and 2012 she has been involved in the teaching of the modules Psychology and Everyday life, Practical Psychology, and Empirical Psychology which are delivered to undergraduate students and for module Advanced Empirical Psychology which is delivered to Master’s students.
